Christmas in Vietnam

Christmas in Vietnam

Article by David Nguyen

Christmas is one of the four most important festivals of the Vietnamese year, along with the Buddha birthday, Tet (the lunar New Year), and the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is celebrated as the birthday of Jesus Christ, known here as “Kito”. The festival is observed here with great gusto despite the fact that Buddhism is the dominant religion in Vietnam and Christians form only a minority.-Phat Diem Cathedral in Ninhbinh Province is considered the spiritual home for the seven million Catholics who live here in Vietnam, a predominantly Buddhist nation. Hundreds of Catholics gather for Christmas Eve Mass in the northern city of Phat Diem. Children stage a nativity play to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ-or Kito, as he is known in Vietnamese-in front of the city cathedral, built in 1891.On Christmas Eve, Hanoians throng to the Catholic Cathedral in the city center. The streets are crowded with people and cars are banned for the night. People celebrate by throwing confetti, talking pictures, and enjoying the Christmas decorations and lights of hotels and department stores. Sidewalk cafes and restaurants are open so revelers can keep their lips wet for singing Christmas carols. As former colony, there are still French influences in the Christmas traditions of Vietnam.-Many Catholic churches have a nativity scene or creche with nearly life-size statues of Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, the shepherds and animals. In some areas of Ho Chi Minh City, usually in Catholic parishes, people have crib scenes in front of their houses and decorate the whole street, turning them into Christmas neighborhoods. Also as in France, in Vietnam Christmas Eve dinner in called reveillon and has a buche de Noel ( a chocolate cake in the shape of a log ) for dessert. Vietnamese people like to give presents of food and a buche de Noel is a popular gift. Other Christmas presents are not very common, although some young people like to exchange Christmas cards.-Children in Vietnam believe in the existence of Santa Claus and put their shoes in front of their doors on Christmas Eve. On the morning of 25th December, they wake up to find their boots filled with treats and presents laid under the Christmas tree. Merry Christmas in Vietnamese is Chuc Mung Giang Sinh!!!

Best Accommodation Options in Orlando

Best Accommodation Options in Orlando

Article by Jon Simpson

Because competition for accommodation is so intense in Orlando, prices are generally much lower than comparable accommodation elsewhere and there are usually added incentives to tempt visitors. These can range from free breakfasts to free shuttle buses to take you to and from Orlando???s attractions.

Finding the perfect place to stay in Orlando is not easy though. There are hundreds of hotels and cheap motels to choose from, ranging from luxury to basic, to suit all tastes and pockets then there are condos and private villas which may better suit families. Staying in the right area can save you a lot of time and money driving to and from the different theme parks, sights and attractions. Book flights to Orlando and check out some the fabulous accommodation options below.Where to stay?Orlando is made up of three main areas. International Drive is situated close to Universal studios, Sea World, and Discovery Cove. A short drive or shuttle bus trip gets you to Disney. Lake Buena Vista is minutes from the thrills and excitement of Walt Disney World resort and Kissimmee offers good value accommodation, whilst being conveniently located. The 192 bus takes you straight to Disney’s Main gate.Location, Location, LocationResort LocationsA useful guide to follow is, the closer you are to the theme parks (Disney, Universal, SeaWorld) the more expensive your Orlando accommodation will be. Upgraded facilities in and around Orlando, including the Kissimmee and International drive areas are constantly on going and mean that prices continue to increase. Here are some options close to the theme parksâ?¦Disney ResortThe magic of Disneyworld will make this a holiday to remember, especially for the kids. A themed Disney hotel of your choice could be the icing on the cake of your getaway. There’s a themed Orlando hotel for everyone, from the world class Floridian Hotel, to the superb Yacht Club, to the magic sounds of the South Pacific at the fantastic Polynesian Hotel or the incredible Caribbean Beach Resort. You can hop aboard the Disney mono rail, which passes through the Contemporary Resort and the camp site grounds of Fort Wilderness. Disney prices range from economy to extravagant luxury resorts with the cheapest room prices ranging from to 0 per night. Be prepared to pay a lot more for high season and for more facilities.Universal ResortClose to the Universal Studios area, you’ll find the superb Portofino Bay Hotel. This re-creation of the Italian city of Portofino is authentic down to the cobblestone streets and pavement cafes. A stay in this Orlando hotel gives you the ambiance of the real seaside resort village of Portofino. There are 750 rooms, 45 suites and many amenities for the whole family from the Beach Pool, Villa Pool and Hillside Pool. The Hard Rock Hotel and the Royal Pacific Resort are also in high demand and will be priced according to season. With the resort options you do save money on car hire and petrol but prices can be very high and rooms not always suitable for everyoneâ??s requirements. It is worth checking out the alternatives.Home from HomeVillas and Condo’sPrivately owned Orlando villas and Orlando condos are available by the thousands. These lodgings give you that ‘at home’ feeling in friendly gated or non-gated residential areas. Many of these areas include fantastic golf courses and stunning lake views. These two styles of accommodation allow you to get away from the crowds and hang out by your very own pool with your family, have BBQs in your own garden and top up that sun tan. Sharing with another family reduces your accommodation budget by half and can be a fun option if you want to make new friends. Free HouseHouse SwappingHome swapping is a mutual exchange of homes, usually at the same time, for a holiday in your own country or abroad. As home swapping is a direct exchange of homes, there are no rental charges for either party, making it a very economical way to travel. Other great advantages are no hotel bills, sometimes use of a car, space and convenience of a real home, live more like a local, save money on eating out and enjoy meeting people in the local neighbourhood. So if you have a home to swap, why not check out the many websites offering home exchanges and you could be in your very own poolside villa in Orlando with all the home comforts you could wish for!If you are not too concerned about where your Orlando accommodation is located (After all, how much time will your family be spending in your room when there’s so much to see?) or you’re on a tight budget, look out for late deals and special offers in low season.

Buckingham Palace ‘popular among those staying in London hotels’

Buckingham Palace ‘popular among those staying in London hotels’

Article by Wilkinson Smith

There are a plethora of tourist attractions that encourage people from across the UK and other parts of the world to stay in hotels in London.

Museums, bars, restaurants, theatres and landmarks including the Houses of Parliament are just some of these.

Another draw for those in London hotels is Buckingham Palace.

The royal venue recorded a record breaking number of visitors during this year’s summer opening.

According to official figures released by those running the establishment, 413,000 visitors passed through the doors of the iconic building during the summer months. This was the highest number in 16 years and the second-highest since the venue opened for the first time to the public in 1993.

However, 1994 still tops the list, with 420,000 people heading to the palace that summer.

It is thought that many of those staying in London hotels who had already visited the tourist hotspot in previous years returned this summer to catch a glimpse of the special exhibition The Queen’s Year, which charted the variety of the monarch’s work.

Also, the new Garden Cafe was a hit with people and managed to serve a total of around 46,000 cups of tea.

Meanwhile, the profiteroles and vanilla mille feuille also proved popular.

Commenting on the success of the season, director of the Royal Collection Jonathan Marsden said: “We are delighted that the number of people choosing to visit Buckingham Palace has continued to grow year on year.

“Winning two major group travel industry awards is enormously encouraging and a recognition of our commitment to providing the best possible experience for our visitors.”

Meanwhile, people staying in hotels in London may be pleased to note that owing to popular demand, the Victoria & Albert: Art & Love exhibition at The Queen’s Gallery has been extended until December 5th.

Best Nightlife on your Bali holidays

Best Nightlife on your Bali holidays

Article by Carly Crowe

A night out in Bali usually begins much later than one might expect, so while on Bali holidays ensure you are prepared and don?t go out to early. Be aware that generally the bars and clubs begin to fill up from about 11pm, and it is often hard to find a good restaurant to eat in before 8:30pm. On Bali holidays, your choices for a night out are endless, the people are friendly and you are sure to have a good time.

Bali Bars and Clubs

The place that should be on the top of your list for a night out while on Bali holidays is the world renowned Kuta area which today extends 4 miles from the original village of Kuta, through Legian, Seminyak and even Basangkasa. One of the most popular bars in the area is the ubiquitous Hard Rock Cafe which is a great venue to see local bands perform. Or try the ever popular Grace Kelly?s Irish pub which is popular with both travellers and locals alike.

A little later in the evening clubs such as 61 Legian which offers three distinct clubs in one, The Club @ The Wave with the largest marble bar in Bali and the Kama Sutra Bali are sure to be heaving with crowds and a fun-loving atmosphere. These are perhaps the three most popular night clubs for anyone on Bali holidays and with no dress code your only worry will be deciding on where to go first.

While Kuta is the largest area for bars and clubs in Bali, do not discount the rest of the island while on Bali holidays. If you are staying in Nusa Dua the Borneo Pub and Trophy Pub are both very popular. There are also a good range of discos found in the luxury hotels of Nusa Dua. Usually attached to the restaurant or bar of the hotel, the crowds in these discos are predictably touristy and are great for meeting fellow travellers if you don?t wish to travel the thirty minutes into Kuta. However, beware if you are visiting Bali in the low season as these discos are often fairly empty as the majority of patrons who frequent these discos are from the nearby hotels.

For those who stay in Ubud while on Bali holidays, the options are more limited than Kuta, but no less enjoyable. Expect a slightly more relaxed and traditional atmosphere and first on your list should be the Beggars Bush bar, a British pub that has been on the Ubud nightlife scene for more than 20 years. Make sure you are there early though as it closes at 10pm. Other popular bars that are worth a visit include: Ozigo Bar, Barandi and the Sai-Sai Bar.

While you are on Bali holidays you are sure to find a bar or club that suits you, no matter what your preference is. Whether you wish to relax in a beachside bar, sip on perfectly crafted cocktails or dance the night away in one of the plethora of clubs, the nightlife you will experience in Bali is hard to beat.

What to eat in Barcelona

What to eat in Barcelona

Article by Asif

Barcelona?s sense of time and, say, Boston?s are entirely different. The day here starts at 9am (at the earliest) and ends at 4,5,6am. This means that breakfast is at 10am, siesta from 2-5pm, and dinner begins at 9pm at the earliest (and lasts until the bars close). It also means that the day revolves around food and conversation: gossip over cafe con leche, banter and bocadillos, life stories with churros con chocolate, and flirting between sips of cava.

Flamenco dinner and dance. Flamenco is a wonderful traditional dance from Spain which is fascinating to watch and quite different from any form of dance you might have seen before, with its strong form of expression. You can take advantage of the Spanish culture by watching Flamenco whilst you also enjoy some fantastic local food.

Your dining experience can be as fun or as serious as you want to make it. The food in Barcelona is considered as the best that Spain has to offer. Seafood is the traditional choice for most of the locals, but the range of choices on the menu is always wide and appealing.

Tapas of course are Spain’s great culinary gift to the world -and are a very good way to keep your budget down while you are eating in Barcelona. Go for Tapas as a quick and easy snack type meal or order a banquet and tuck in. There are literally thousands of tapas bars and cafes around Barcelona.

In Spring, you’ll find wonderfully tasty wild asparagus is plentiful, and lots of calçots (large spring onions); in the autumn there’s nothing better than freshly picked rovellons (mushrooms) and in winter, you’ll enjoy a hearty escudella d’olla – one of the best stews you could wish to find anywhere.

And just as Barcelona is a city of fine restaurants, it is also a place simply chock full of wonderful bars. Spain, needless to say, is a country where the bar is an integral part of social life and Barcelona is no different in that respect.
